Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Schwesig is expecting more refugees from Ukraine again

Schwerin/Rostock (dpa/mv) - Because of the Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) is expecting more refugees again. "We are preparing for the fact that many people will flee again because of the destroyed infrastructure and that we will have to open more emergency shelters again," said the politician in an interview with the Ostsee-Zeitung (OZ/Monday). The supply of water, electricity and heat is being systematically destroyed. According to the information, the state wants to discuss further steps with the federal government.

In the interview, Schwesig emphasized the political break in the previously close relations between Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Russia after the start of the aggressive war. The country has stopped the partnership with the region around St. Petersburg and is helping to implement the oil embargo by importing oil via the port of Rostock. In addition, the onshore infrastructure of the Nord Stream gas pipelines is to be used to import liquefied natural gas (LNG).

For example, oil landed by tanker in Rostock is to be transported via an existing pipeline to the PCK refinery in Schwedt, Brandenburg. So far, this has been supplied from Russia. In Lubmin in western Pomerania, two LNG terminals are currently being prepared for the import of gas that is also transported by ship. The first private project by the investor Deutsche Regas is scheduled to start this year.

In an interview with the Schweriner Volkszeitung (SVZ/Montag), when asked about the spread of the conflict in Ukraine to Germany, the prime minister said: "We support Ukraine and the people who are fleeing to us. If that gives rise to hope of an end to the conflict War is growing, then that's a good sign".
