Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: storm drives 95-meter ship to Prerower beach

A 95 meter long steel colossus including an excavator has been lying in the shallow water on the beach in Prerow since the weekend. The working ship had broken free in the storm.

Prerow (dpa/mv) - The storm on Saturday tore a 95 meter long and 20 meter wide workboat out of its anchorage on the Baltic Sea off Prerow and drove it onto the beach of the holiday resort. There the barge and excavator lay in the shallow water on Sunday. The ship is used to transport natural stones from Scandinavia for the new seaport of Prerow, the water police said.

On Saturday, according to the information, there was up to force eight on the Baltic Sea in the north wind region. The anchors could not withstand that, it was said. The salvage of the distressed vessel should represent an "immense challenge", according to the water police. When and how the ship should be salvaged was still open on Sunday.
