Neubrandenburg (dpa/mv) - A trial against a pensioner who is said to have attacked his neighbor with a machete and seriously injured him began in front of the Neubrandenburg district court on Tuesday. At the start of the trial, the accused admitted the attack with the large knife on May 10 in Bartow (Mecklenburg Lake District). For his part, he only wanted to defend himself against an attack by the 36-year-old neighbor on him.

The senior, who was 70 at the time of the crime, is accused of attempted manslaughter. According to the indictment, he is said to have tried to hit the neighbor first on the head and then seriously injured his arms and upper body. However, the man managed to take the gun away from the attacker and escape to his property.

The accused, who is said to have been under the influence of alcohol, was caught at the scene of the crime and taken into custody. He faces several years in prison. The trial will continue on October 25, and a verdict is planned for November 8 at the earliest, it said.
