Loddin/Bergen (dpa/mv) - After lightning strikes, a single-family house in Bergen on Rügen and a holiday home in Loddin on Usedom burned down on Saturday night.

The fire in the thatched cottage on Usedom could not be contained. The fire brigade let the house burn down in a controlled manner, said the Neubrandenburg police headquarters. No one was injured and the house was uninhabited.

Lightning struck the tiled roof of the family home in Bergen. The residents, a married couple, saw the fire in the attic and left the house in time. They weren't hurt. Surrounding houses were evacuated to be on the safe side, the fire brigade extinguished the fire. Police said the home was uninhabitable. The property damage was estimated at around 200,000 euros on Usedom and 500,000 euros on Rügen.
