Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: work on storm surge protection dune in Rerik nearing completion

Rerik (dpa/mv) - The flushing work on the storm surge protection dune near Rerik (Rostock district), which began at the end of October, will be completed on Friday. About 160,000 cubic meters of sand were washed up over a length of 1,300 meters. The flushing pipes are expected to be removed from the beach in the week from December 12th to 16th, as the Ministry of the Environment announced on Thursday on request.

The beach grass could therefore no longer be planted this year. For this reason, sand trap fences would first be erected in the area of the crown and slope to protect the freshly washed up sections from wind erosion during the storm surge season. The plants are now to be planted in February/March 2023. The total cost of the work is around 2.6 million euros.

The client for the construction phase was the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, represented by the State Office for Agriculture and the Environment in Central Mecklenburg. According to the Schwerin Ministry of the Environment, the federal government is contributing 70 percent to the financing as part of the joint task "Improvement of agricultural structures and coastal protection". The state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will take care of the rest.
