Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - According to the latest figures, 13,493 prisoners are behind bars in North Rhine-Westphalia. As of the end of March 2022, there were slightly fewer people imprisoned than a year earlier with 13,641 people, as the state statistics office IT.NRW announced on Thursday. Only a small part of 6 percent (813 prisoners) is female.

With 9,925 prisoners, most of them in North Rhine-Westphalia were serving a sentence under general criminal law. A further 737 people were concerned with youth imprisonment. 149 detainees were in preventive detention - without exception, they were men. Another 2,602 people were in custody.

More than a third of the prisoners - 4615 detainees - were between 30 and 39 years old. A good one percent were inmates under the age of 18, i.e. 151 young people. And 39 percent, i.e. 5258 people, had foreign nationality.
