North Rhine-Westphalia: Criticism of police control: change of investigators

Dortmund/Recklinghausen (dpa/lnw) - After public criticism of a police check in Dortmund, the Recklinghausen police took over the investigation for reasons of neutrality. A Dortmund police spokeswoman said that everyone involved - the young people who were checked, the parents and the police officers - was being spoken to. "This is explained without bias and very thoroughly." Results would be communicated as soon as possible, said a police spokeswoman in Recklinghausen.

The check was in Dortmund on Friday evening because three young people aged 14, 16 and 17 were on a single e-scooter. According to the police, the three ignored the stop sign, later parked the scooter and fled on foot. The police officers caught the three young women and took their personal details because they suspected that the young women might be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

There were verbal arguments, apparently also with the girls' legal guardians, who were filmed on their cell phones. This was published on social media and widely commented on. A video shows one of the young people sitting on the street. One of the police officers yells at the young woman, she yells back. Another youth, who cannot be seen in the picture, accuses a police officer in another video of using racist terms. The officer denies it. Several media had reported on the process.
