North Rhine-Westphalia: FDP sees state government in crisis

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - FDP parliamentary group leader Henning Höne has accused the black-green NRW state government of having ignored the seriousness of the economic situation as a result of the Russian war against Ukraine for too long. "They are hopelessly overwhelmed by this crisis," said the politician in Düsseldorf on Wednesday.

The "difficult situation" has long been known at economic research institutes, companies and in the political debate. Since September, the CDU and the Greens have not used any opportunities to provide relief or to take precautions against the crisis. Now the state government is being caught up in reality and suddenly wants to set up a special fund worth five billion euros within two weeks to deal with the consequences of the Ukraine war for NRW. Nevertheless, the CDU and Greens see "no need for corrections in the core budget" and are making it "much too easy" for themselves.

On Wednesday, the state parliament cleared the way for further debt of up to five billion euros. With the majority of the black-green government coalition, the deputies determined an "extraordinary emergency situation" for NRW due to the economic consequences of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. This made it possible to take out loans beyond the limit of the debt brake. The government is creating a so-called special fund for this purpose. FDP and SPD did not agree because of constitutional concerns.
