North Rhine-Westphalia: Fewer pigs on NRW farms - more operational tasks

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - Fewer pigs are kept on North Rhine-Westphalian farms and the number of farms is falling. Within six months from November 2021 to the most recent survey in early May 2022, the number of pigs kept fell by 3.4 percent to 6.1 million animals, the State Statistical Office IT.NRW announced on Wednesday. The number of farms (at least 50 pigs or 10 breeding sows) fell by 140 to around 6,030 in the same period (minus 2.3 percent).

For years, farmers have been complaining about declining stocks and business closures because of what they consider to be inadequate market prices and exploding costs.
