North Rhine-Westphalia: homicide in Duisburg: surprising turnaround

Duisburg (dpa / lnw) - There was a surprising turnaround in the investigation into the violent death of an 84-year-old in Duisburg. Instead of an act by the previously urgently suspected 89-year-old roommate with dementia, the investigators are now assuming that the 45-year-old neighbor stabbed the woman, police and prosecutors said on Friday.

According to this, the woman got involved in contradicting statements when witnesses were questioned after the crime in August. Her home was searched and her cell phone confiscated, the statement said. This resulted in the urgent suspicion against the woman. On Thursday, the public prosecutor's office issued a pre-trial arrest warrant, and the 45-year-old was arrested on the same day.

In August, initial information initially indicated that the 89-year-old, who was suffering from dementia and was physically severely restricted, allegedly injured her five-year-old roommate with a knife in such a way that she died despite resuscitation measures by the rescue workers.

The 45-year-old neighbor reported at the time that she had seen to it that everything was right. When she found the seriously injured woman, who was near the 89-year-old with the knife in her hand, she called the police. The neighbor had stated that she herself was injured when trying to hold the elderly woman.

The 89-year-old was then admitted to a closed facility. According to the latest findings, she was now able to leave. There were no further details about the investigation.
