North Rhine-Westphalia: inland boatman pushes the wheelhouse against the bridge

Datteln (dpa / lnw) - On the Wesel-Datteln Canal, an accident has occurred for the second time within a good week, in which a cargo ship hit a bridge with its wheelhouse. According to the Datteln fire brigade, the skipper of a pusher unit loaded with coal was slightly injured on Friday afternoon. A pushed convoy is a motorized ship that pushes a so-called lighter.

As the water protection police in Duisburg added, the canal and the Natrop Bridge were still navigable. According to initial information from the water police, only the roof of the wheelhouse was damaged. The cause of the accident is part of the investigation - it is also about the extent to which a wheelhouse was lowered.

Already in the night of Thursday of the previous week on the Wesel-Datteln canal in Dorsten, a pushed convoy loaded with coal also hit a bridge with the wheelhouse. The skipper was also slightly injured in this accident. The canal was temporarily closed at the time. As reported by the fire brigade, the driver's cab had been torn off in the collision.
