North Rhine-Westphalia: "Lützerath monks" read the riot act to absent Greens

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - In the absence of the Green Party, climate protection activists from the Öko-Party disguised as monks read the Levites on Ash Wednesday in front of their Düsseldorf headquarters. The reason for the protest is the criminal proceedings that are being carried out against the participants at the time because of the occupation of the party office a month ago.

A cabaret artist in monk's disguise from the Düsseldorfer Kommödchen had to drop his original plan to "take the confession" from the Greens, who are co-governing in North Rhine-Westphalia, because of their attitude to the eviction of the lignite village of Lützerath. Instead, he spoke to them in front of closed doors in a circle of 18 fellow combatants also dressed as monks. Meanwhile, the party leadership was in Cologne for the political Ash Wednesday with its federal chairman Omid Nouripour.

In January, around 30 climate protection activists occupied the party office of the Greens in North Rhine-Westphalia to protest against the eviction of the village of Lützerath in the Rhenish lignite mining area. After ten hours, the police had ended the occupation. A few days earlier, activists had unloaded 250 kilos of lignite briquettes in front of party headquarters.

Since the protesters did not want to leave the building voluntarily, the party enforced their house rules and filed a criminal complaint. According to unanimous information from the state party and the environmental activists, there had been investigations into trespassing against a dozen participants after the occupation. The protesters have now asked the Greens to withdraw the criminal complaint and stop the proceedings.
