North Rhine-Westphalia: Martinszüge should take place normally again

Cologne (dpa / lnw) - Public Martins celebrations are to take place normally again this year in North Rhine-Westphalia. In the corona pandemic, they were mostly canceled. According to the city on Friday, the city of Cologne has now approved 130 moves to St. Martin (November 11th). According to the Catholic city deanery, a large Martin parade with around 2000 people is planned in Bonn, which last took place in this form in 2019.

In Krefeld, the chairman of the Krefeld Citizens' Association working group, Manfred Grünwald, said: "At the moment I'm assuming that it's practically the same as before Corona." According to the city, 17 registrations for moves have been received in Kleve so far. Children mostly parade through the streets with lanterns.

Martin, with his memorial day on November 11, is considered one of the most well-known and popular saints in the Catholic Church. The Roman soldier is said to have cut his cloak in two to help a freezing beggar in what is now France in the fourth century AD. Jesus Christ is said to have appeared to him in a dream - wrapped in a divided cloak. After this experience he left the army and later even became a bishop.
