North Rhine-Westphalia: More road deaths in NRW: increase of 6 percent

Dusseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The number of road deaths in North Rhine-Westphalia last year rose by 6 percent to 451 casualties. NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) attributed the development on Wednesday to the increase in traffic after the corona pandemic: "It's a post-corona statistic. Life has returned to the streets," he said. This was preceded by a record low of 425 road deaths in 2021. Overall, the number of accidents on the roads increased by 4.8 percent to 610,000.

Fatal accidents with e-scooters were also registered for the first time in North Rhine-Westphalia: 3 people lost their lives. The number of traffic deaths related to illegal car racing rose particularly sharply: from one case in 2021 to 12 deaths last year.
