Düsseldorf (dpa/lnw) - 17 times as many children from Ukraine are being taught at schools in North Rhine-Westphalia in the current school year as in the previous school years. A total of 42,500 Ukrainian children and young people in North Rhine-Westphalia go to school, as reported by the State Statistical Office on Wednesday. In the current school year, they account for 1.7 percent of the approximately 2.5 million schoolchildren in NRW. As the state office explained, they are the third largest group in the student body.

At 84.4 percent, students with a German passport are the largest group, followed by children with Syrian nationality with a share of 3.1 percent. Around a third of children from Ukraine attend primary school.
