North Rhine-Westphalia: Parliamentary groups submit motions on poverty, corona and energy

Düsseldorf (dpa/lnw) - The government factions of the CDU and the Greens will submit joint motions to combat poverty, the corona pandemic and the gas crisis to the NRW state parliament in the coming week. The parliamentary groups want to instruct the black-green state government to convene a poverty conference in view of the inflation and to work out a pact against child poverty.

The state government should contact the boards for the needy to ensure that they can maintain their offers. Their state association had reported that the number of people seeking help in NRW had doubled to around 350,000 since 2020.

The state government should also influence the energy suppliers so that they refrain from blocking electricity and gas in the coming winter for defaulting payers.

At the federal level, the state government should work to ensure that the standard rates in basic security are inflation-proof. In addition, basic child security should be supported.

When it comes to the corona pandemic, the parliamentary groups want the recommendations of the Federal Government’s Expert Council to be followed. The benchmark for the future fight against the pandemic must be the occupancy of the intensive care beds, the clinic capacities and the death rate.

Interventions that protect fundamental rights, such as wearing masks indoors and on public transport, should be given preference. Visiting bans in retirement and nursing homes should be avoided at all costs. Necessary measures must be communicated in a timely and understandable manner.

Structures should be in place nationwide to carry out a large number of vaccinations every week within a few days.

In terms of the gas crisis, the state government should support the federal government in order to ensure security of supply and to avoid the declaration of the gas emergency level. The state government should also accelerate and promote the expansion of renewable energies in NRW. The state government should use energy particularly sparingly in its own properties.
