Saxony-Anhalt: the shortage of teachers is getting worse: failures are inevitable

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - In the new school year in Saxony-Anhalt, lessons are inevitable due to a lack of teachers. According to the latest calculations, the so-called teaching supply is currently 92 percent, as Education Minister Eva Feußner (CDU) said on Tuesday in Magdeburg. This is the lowest level of education in the country's history. There was a shortage of teachers, especially in secondary schools and special needs schools. The declared goal of the coalition of the CDU, SPD and FDP is 103 percent in order to be able to cushion losses due to illness or parental leave.

The new school year begins this Thursday for around 209,000 pupils in regular operation. 19,500 of them are enrolled in school. According to the minister, 748 teachers and 349 lateral entrants have been hired so far this year. There are around 14,300 active teachers at general schools, of whom 1,300 are lateral entrants.
