North Rhine-Westphalia: Police officer shoots at burglars and seriously injures him

Essen (dpa / lnw) - A police officer shot a burglar during an operation in Essen and seriously injured him. The officials were called on Thursday afternoon because a suspect had broken into a residential building, as the public prosecutor's office in Essen and the police in Bochum reported on Friday. A 37-year-old police officer met a 31-year-old. "He was holding an ax in his hand and approached the officer with it." The police officer fired several shots from his service weapon. "The 31-year-old was hit several times, but not critically injured."

The 31-year-old was taken to a hospital. According to the information, there is an arrest warrant for burglary against him, but it was suspended. The course of action in Essen and the "background of the shots fired" are examined. For reasons of neutrality, the Bochum police took over the investigation.
