Premier League considering a voluntary ban on gambling sponsorships

The top English soccer league may be moving in a different direction at a time when there are seven exclusive partners to the NFL's sportsbook. This is mainly because it fears that the government will force them in that direction.

The BBC Sport reports that the Premier League could voluntarily ban gambling sponsorships. The decision is expected to be made by July 21.

Half of the 20 league teams featured betting sponsors on their jerseys in the 2021-21 season. To implement the voluntary ban 14 teams would need to agree.

Since the end of the last season, Crystal Palace has dropped a gambling sponsorship. Everton and Bournemouth, newly promoted, have signed new jersey deals with gambling companies.

This potential move is coming at a time that some are urging the government ban such partnerships.

It is relevant for the NFL because similar regulatory measures could be taken in the United States eventually. This is especially true if a betting scandal sparks Congress to control the growth of gambling money pro-sports. With the NFL, who has long ago abhorred legalized gambling, at its front, when it comes down to passing the hat to one betting company to another.
