Saxony: acquittals after deadly pool party

Grimma (dpa / sn) - Almost three years after the death of two men at a Christmas party in the district of Leipzig, the criminal trial has ended with acquittals. The court is convinced that the accused should not have informed themselves about the dangers of dry ice, said a spokesman for the district court in Grimma on Monday when asked.

The public prosecutor had accused the 44 and 49-year-old men of negligent homicide and negligent bodily harm. They are said to have dumped a block of dry ice into a pool at the private Christmas party in Gerichshain on December 22, 2019. Carbon dioxide was released and had collected above the water surface. Three men in the pool passed out and went under. A 20-year-old and a 39-year-old drowned. The third victim, a 47-year-old man at the time, was revived.

The seller of the dry ice did not inform the two men about the dangers, it said on Monday in the verdict. In addition, they would not have used the ice "inappropriately". The public prosecutor's office and the co-plaintiffs had demanded fines. The verdict is not yet legally binding.
