Saxony-Anhalt: Almost two thirds of all property tax returns are still missing

The tax offices in Saxony-Anhalt are still missing many property tax returns. Actually, these should be submitted by the end of the month. However, the finance ministers are today discussing an extension of the deadline.

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - The tax offices in Saxony-Anhalt are still missing almost two thirds of all required property tax returns. This was announced by the Ministry of Finance on request. As of Wednesday, a total of 368,804 declarations had been received by the tax offices. "The proportion of the total tax returns to be submitted nationwide corresponds to 36.3 percent," said a spokeswoman.

From 2025, a new property tax calculation should take effect. To do this, almost 36 million properties in Germany have to be revalued. This is done on the basis of information that all owners must submit.

The tax authorities have been receiving the data since July 1st. Usually it is about the land and living space, the type of building, the year of construction and the so-called standard land value. The owners have to enter the data in the online portal "Elster" or on a special page of the Federal Ministry of Finance. Before the start, experts warned that it could go wrong because it was far too complicated.

The submission deadline is at the end of October. Saxony-Anhalt's Finance Minister Michael Richter (CDU) recently announced that he would wait before making a decision on a possible extension of the deadline. According to his house, the topic is to be discussed at a conference of finance ministers on October 13.

Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP), on the other hand, had already shown himself open to extending the deadline. "We shouldn't put too much pressure on ourselves with the property tax." However, the deadline is not based on a federal regulation, but on determinations made by the federal states.
