Saxony-Anhalt: Bundesrat supports civil protection initiative

Magdeburg/Berlin (dpa/sa) - According to the Ministry of the Interior of Saxony-Anhalt, the Bundesrat supports the initiative for better civil protection in emergencies and disasters. "Today the Bundesrat approved a motion for a resolution on the sustainable strengthening of civil protection and disaster control," said a spokeswoman for the Ministry of the Interior in Magdeburg. "It is a core task of the state to protect its population," added Interior Minister Tamara Zieschang (CDU) according to the announcement. For this, structures would have to be created or rebuilt in order to be prepared for emergencies and catastrophes.

According to the initiative, resources must be expanded in order to implement concrete preventive measures. Among other things, the federal government is to provide around ten billion euros within ten years. It is also about improved joint crisis management by the federal and state governments, said the spokeswoman. This includes cross-border risk or damage situations as well as digital aspects of joint crisis management and the development of national reserves. A joint campaign is also intended to strengthen the population's awareness of the dangers and their ability to help themselves.
