Salzwedel (dpa/sa) - When electing the mayor of Salzwedel, a runoff is necessary. On Sunday, none of the five applicants received the necessary absolute majority. The 48-year-old business economist Hendrik Stiller (CDU), who is the branch manager at the district savings bank Altmark-West, and the 57-year-old city treasurer Olaf Meining, who is supported as a non-party candidate by the SPD, will go into the runoff in two weeks. Stiller won 34.89 percent of the votes on Sunday, Meining 29.39 percent.

The journalist Marco Heide, who was supported by the Left and the Greens, achieved 21.17 percent, the security guard Andi Scotland (AfD) 8.23 ​​percent and the restaurateur Nils Krümmel (Free Voters) 6.32 percent of the vote.

The turnout was 44.95 percent, as shown by the online presentation of the election results. There were around 19,400 eligible voters. The term of office of the previous Mayor of Salzwedel Sabine Blümel (independent) ends in March 2023.
