Saxony-Anhalt: Synod opened: EKD peace commissioner against weapons

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - The synod of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) began on Sunday with a service in Magdeburg Cathedral. In view of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the members of the church parliament want to discuss in detail their position on arms deliveries and pacifism. "It's about peace and justice and nothing less," said the regional bishop of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany, Friedrich Kramer. He is also the peace commissioner of the EKD.

It is clear that Germany must help Ukraine. However, Kramer refused to supply weapons in this context. Christians must also ask themselves if they could agree to an unjust peace, he said.

The synod meets until Wednesday. The Evangelical Church in Germany has almost 20 million members. The EKD Council Chair is Annette Kurschus.
