Saxony-Anhalt: Theater: "Extraordinarily versatile" new season

Dessau-Roßlau (dpa/sa) - The Anhaltisches Theater Dessau starts its 228th season with an open-air concert on September 3rd. "This time our program is extraordinarily diverse," said General Manager Johannes Weigand on Tuesday. Two popular classics would "frame" the program. The premiere of Mozart's opera "The Magic Flute" is planned for the big house. Thus, for the first time in twelve years, a work by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is on the repertoire, said Weigand. The season ended with Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana".

A total of 18 premieres are on the schedule, Weigand announced. These include classics of Italian opera such as Giacomo Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" and Giuseppe Verdi's "La Traviata". In addition, with "A Streetcar Named Desire" by Tennessee Williams, one of the great American classics of the 20th century is dared to be staged .

There are also numerous modern interpretations such as the musical "The Black Rider: The Casting of the Magic Bullets" with music by Tom Waits. The play has now become one of the most frequently performed subjects on German stages, said Weigand. There is also a premiere of "Jurassic Park (... or life finds its way)" by Klaus Gehre based on Steven Spielberg, the theater announced.

According to Weigand, the puppet theater is planning four new productions, including a world premiere ("Das schiefe Haus" by Thomas Freyer), "Nibelungen - a solo for Kriemhild" - a puppet play by Karin Eppler - and "Hugging me?" based on the children's book by Eoin McLaughlin and "Kalif Storch" based on Wilhelm Hauff.
