Chemnitz (dpa/sn) - The cities of Leipzig, Plauen and Chemnitz want to work closely together in the application for the "Future Center for European Transformation and German Unity". The three mayors signed a corresponding agreement on Thursday, as the cities jointly announced. Leipzig and Plauen only agreed in June to apply as a double location for the planned future center.
As the Capital of Culture 2025, Chemnitz now wants to support the concept of the two cities, the statement said. Among other things, the learning and memorial site Kaßberg prison - a former Stasi remand prison - should be taken into account.
Sven Schulze (SPD), Mayor of the City of Chemnitz, said: ""C the Unseen" was the central theme of our application for the European Capital of Culture 2025. Seeing the unseen has a special meaning for me. This potential is not only in Chemnitz , but also in Leipzig and Plauen." The Kaßberg prison is "an indispensable part of the Saxon culture of remembrance and also contributes to making the unseen visible".
The federal government started the competition for the new scientific institution on July 1st. With it, the federal government wants to honor the experience of East Germans with change and upheaval. This involves investments of up to 200 million euros. The future center, which is also intended to be a meeting place and event location, is to be built in an east German city by 2028. A whole range of municipalities have expressed interest, including Jena, Frankfurt (Oder), Halle and Wittenberg.
