Saxony: Left: Hospitals are not allowed to distribute profits

Dresden (dpa / sn) - The left in the Saxon state parliament see a huge need for investment in hospitals in the Free State. Every euro is needed, said health expert Susanne Schaper on Friday in Dresden. No hospital should pay out more profits. The unsuitable flat rate system has to go. Saxony finally has to fulfill its legal obligation to support hospitals appropriately with investment costs. "The sum of 240 million euros, which is required annually according to the state hospital association, has been massively undercut for years."

Schaper, party leader of the left and a nurse by profession, had visited several hospitals at the beginning of her summer tour to find out about the concerns and needs of the workforce. The facilities did an outstanding job during the corona pandemic, but were plagued by major problems - above all, a lack of staff and an investment backlog, she emphasized. This applies to state hospitals as well as to district-owned and private clinics.

"We could recruit a lot of nurses if the working conditions were better. One prerequisite for this would be to stop all hospitals from distributing profits, because every euro is needed for reinvestment or for the operation as a whole," said the politician.

According to Schaper, expectations of the new hospital law are high. "Criticism has been expressed to the effect that the fixation on the number of beds should continue to exist and that specialist clinics, for example for psychiatry, need to protect their status." There is still a fear of deficits in hospital planning and financing, especially in rural areas.
