Saxony: model project against heat in the schoolyard announced

Dresden (dpa/sn) - Heat protection instead of heat: The city of Dresden has announced a model project against heat in the schoolyard and is looking for "green ideas" for better learning, living and working conditions in the vicinity of schools. "Most school grounds often have sealed areas, large buildings and little greenery," the administration justified its initiative on Monday. 180,000 euros are planned for the project - money for building work, planting and redesigning the courtyards. The city of Dresden is financing ten percent of the total amount, 90 percent are to come from the "Sustainably out of the crisis" program of the Ministry for Energy, Climate Protection, Environment and Agriculture.

According to the city, the number of hot days with a temperature of more than 30 degrees Celsius has increased sharply in recent years. What is now considered "significantly too warm for the time of year" will mean normality in the future, it said: "Heat stress is increasing and endangers health. The pressure for municipalities to act is therefore also high at school locations." Greening in combination with structural systems should remedy the situation and be tested as a model in the 4th elementary school "Am Rosengarten".
