Saxony: Municipality wants to close daycare center in winter due to costs

Oberschöna (dpa/sn) - The municipality of Oberschöna (Middle Saxony district) wants to close a day-care center in the winter months due to cost developments. "As a municipality, we have to reduce our costs in all areas," said the municipality on its website. The small number of children in the facility in Bräunsdorf is disproportionate to the costs. Currently, 13 children of kindergarten age and three children of crèche age are cared for in the facility. Mayor Rico Gerhardt (CDU) told the "Freie Presse" (Wednesday): "We have to make several restrictions because of the high energy costs." The goal is to reopen in April 2023.

The website says: "We have been criticized for some time because of the inefficiency of higher authorities." The mayor said there that he decided to close the building for a limited period of time "with a heavy heart". He is aware that it will not be an easy time for children, parents and employees. All children can continue to be cared for during the closing time, as there are enough places available in the community facilities.

The mayor appealed to parents not to register their children in other institutions. This "even more" endangers the preservation of the facility, which was renovated last year for 65,000 euros from municipal funds.
