Saxony: Refugee Council: criticism of unequal treatment of refugees

Dresden (dpa / sn) - The Saxon Refugee Council criticizes the government's handling of refugees from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. "Just because there is less awareness of the disaster in Syria in this country, for example, is by no means a reason to deport people to a dictatorship or deny them protection," said Dave Schmidtke from the Saxon Refugee Council, according to a statement on Thursday in Dresden. Schmidtke therefore called for more solidarity with the refugees, similar to that towards Ukrainians who had fled.

According to the council, 1,200 people came to Saxony in August and 2,400 in September, mostly from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. These numbers are not comparable to those during the 2015 refugee crisis: "A ghost debate is brewing here, since Germany has managed to take in over a million Ukrainians in the past few months," the council said.
