"Spare parts warehouse? It doesn't matter!": Sonya Kraus enjoys life without cancer

With optimism, joie de vivre and without any complaints, Sonya Kraus fights against her breast cancer. With success: Since the summer she has been considered cancer-free. Who can blame her for wanting to enjoy life to the fullest and putting a sense of duty aside.

It's been about a year since Sonya Kraus was diagnosed with breast cancer. In February she made her illness public - almost at the same time as she took part in the Vox format "Showtime of my Life", in which several stars promoted cancer prevention by putting down a strip (also available on RTL). As a result, the moderator let her fans regularly participate in her fight against cancer, not least on her Instagram account.

Many praised Kraus for her open and encouraging approach to the disease. The "Regional Association of Evangelical Women in Hesse and Nassau" recently even awarded the Frankfurt native a prize for this. In fact, Kraus never seemed to let her cancer take away her optimism or courage - despite chemotherapy, hair loss and even the removal of both breasts.

In the summer of 2022, the redeeming news followed: The 49-year-old is currently cancer-free. Kraus first celebrated her recovery with a trip to the legendary "Burning Man" festival in the Nevada desert. "It was a great end to this experience," she says in an RTL interview.

But that should by far not have been the last exciting experience on the further life of the presenter. She was recently on vacation with her family in Tel Aviv. "My sense of duty towards my job has decreased a bit," admits Kraus and adds: "I don't want to say that I'm addicted to pleasure, but traveling is something, I still have a very long bucket list that starts with Australia and ends with the ISS."

Who can blame her after all the hardships of the past year? Nevertheless, "normality" is returning elsewhere at the same time. In any case, her two sons, born in 2010 and 2012, have already taken off their kid gloves, explains Kraus: "Mother is back for everything. And mother can be insulted and used for everything." But that's "a good thing, too," adds the moderator.

Apparently, their children also have a say when it comes to their looks. "It doesn't work at all what I originally always wanted to do: shave my head bald and go bald to Burning Man," says Kraus, adding, looking at her sons: "No, well, they didn't want that."

So Kraus may have to rely on the wig she's been wearing since her chemotherapy for a little longer. But she also accepts that with a good dose of humour. "I'm totally happy with my hair situation because: It's better than the original, just like the breasts," says Kraus with a laugh in the RTL interview and adds: "Even if I'm a spare parts store now - it doesn't matter!"
