Thuringia: Almost 25,000 Ukraine refugees admitted to Thuringia

The tug-of-war over the accommodation of Ukraine refugees continues. A special session of the migration committee of the state parliament does not bring any tangible results.

Erfurt (dpa/th) - Despite the existing housing problems in four urban districts and five districts, Thuringia continues to take in war refugees from Ukraine. Within the past week there were more than 500, some of whom were housed in prepared, previously empty apartments, but also in gyms, as a spokesman for the state administration office said in Weimar on Thursday. So far, the Free State has given almost 25,000 refugees from Ukraine a place to stay.

The migration committee of the state parliament met on Thursday because of the housing problems at the request of the CDU parliamentary group. However, according to members of the Left and the CDU, there were no decisions. The differences of opinion between the governing coalition and the opposition persist.

The migration policy spokesman for the CDU, Stefan Schard, did not rule out a request from his group for a special session of the state parliament. "If the Ramelow government does not finally move, a special plenum cannot be ruled out," he said.

Schard spoke of a disappointing special session. From his point of view, the financing of the accommodation costs is still unclear. The local politician of the left, Sascha Bilay, on the other hand, referred to the promise of the red-red-green government of Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow to examine an advance payment to the municipalities. However, this also shows that the budget cuts passed by the CDU make flexible regulations more difficult.

At the end of July, the state government asked the federal government to make more money available in order to be able to prepare vacant apartments for accommodation. In addition, she wants to check whether the state can grant an advance payment of 2,500 euros per person to the districts and independent cities for the reception and accommodation of war refugees - as a kind of advance payment for future payments.
