Thuringia: Cool weather affects bat night at the Hainichrand

Hütscheroda (dpa/th) - Cool and damp weather has affected the bat night on the Hainichrand in Hütscheroda. That's why the animals only hesitantly went on a foray on Saturday, as Katrin Vogel, Managing Director of Wildland Hainich gGmbH, said on Sunday. Only one animal got caught in the nets and even this loner was able to free itself so quickly that it could not serve as a visual object. Actually, different species such as noctule bats, mouse-eared bats or pipistrelle were expected.

The Bat Night was intended to give interested laypeople the opportunity to learn more about the animals. For this reason, the plan was to capture some of them briefly in the presence of experienced conservationists and experts in order to be able to study them up close.

According to the Natura 2000 station in Hörselberg-Hainich (Wartburgkreis), 20 of the 24 bat species living in Germany are native to Thuringia. According to the information, they significantly enrich biodiversity and contribute to a stable ecosystem. Among other things, they eat pests, spread seeds or even pollinate flowers. The edge area of the Hainich nature reserve offers a suitable mosaic of landscape structures and, according to the conservationists, is particularly suitable for observing bats. Anyone interested in bats will have the opportunity to do so again on September 2: According to Vogel, there will be a BUND bat night.
