Thuringia: horse attacked in the paddock: the police examine mistreatment

Gera (dpa/th) - A horse mare was injured in a paddock in Gera. A man is said to have approached the animal on Tuesday morning, the police said on Wednesday. A video camera recorded the attack. The police evaluate the recordings and check whether the man has violated the animal. As is usual in such cases, a connection to other attacks on horses is also being examined, said a spokeswoman. According to the spokeswoman, the mare had no cuts. The police asked witnesses to come forward.

In October, another horse was injured in a paddock in the Wartburg district. An unknown person probably inflicted a cut several centimeters long on the animal, which had to be treated by veterinarians, as the police announced at the time. The crime scene was a paddock near Frankenroda. In the days before, two horses had been injured in a paddock in the Falken district of Treffurt. The crime scenes are only a few kilometers apart. Here, too, a connection between the acts was examined.

In July, the police in Thuringia arrested a man who is said to have injured and killed horses and other animals for years. The 40-year-old is accused of several attacks on horses, cattle or sheep between February 2018 and September 2020, as a spokesman for the Gera public prosecutor said. He is said to have used both firearms and stabbing weapons in the Jena area.
