Thuringia: Police cars burned down: Judgment expected in Erfurt

Erfurt (dpa/th) - In the trial for arson in connection with 15 destroyed police cars, a verdict is to be pronounced on Wednesday (9 a.m.). The public prosecutor accused the accused of joint arson at the beginning of the trial. Together with an accomplice who has remained unknown, he is said to have set fire to brand-new and not yet delivered police cars on the premises of a car dealership. The crime in 2013 resulted in total damage of 750,000 euros.

The arson caused a great deal of excitement at the time. For a long time, the search for perpetrators was unsuccessful. Investigations were launched after a cellmate reported to Tonna Prison where the accused was being held for, among other things, setting garbage containers and trucks on fire. Charges were filed about eight years after the incident.

According to the district court spokesman, before the planned verdict was announced, the public prosecutor's office and the defense had each spoken out in favor of imprisonment. Prosecutors asked for four years. With the prejudice of the 30-year-old from 2017, a total of seven years and six months would come together. According to the spokesman, the defense advocated a total sentence of six years and six months.
