Thuringia: Thuringians in 325 municipalities can elect their mayors

Erfurt (dpa/th) - In 325 Thuringian communities, citizens can decide on their mayors on Sunday. Around 210,000 people are called to the mayoral elections, according to the State Statistical Office. Polling stations are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Around 3,000 volunteers are on the job.

Decisions are made on 318 honorary mayors in rather small towns. There are also seven full-time mayors, including in the district town of Sonneberg, in Leinefelde-Worbis (district of Eichsfeld) and in Wasungen (district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen).

406 candidates applied for the offices. Most communities have only one candidate on the ballot, and 22 have none at all. There, persons who are eligible for election can be entered on the ballot paper.
