The number of those affected is increasing: the federal government launches an information portal on Long Covid

Millions of Germans suffer a corona infection, some of them are still struggling with the consequences months later. The federal government wants to help here and is launching a portal with extensive information on Long Covid. Health Minister Lauterbach reminds that the pandemic is not over.

Those affected can now find out about Long Covid, i.e. the long-term consequences of a corona infection, via a new online service. The information portal www.longcovid-info.de was created by the Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA) in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Health. Here, those affected and their relatives, employees and employers as well as all interested parties will find "reliable information about the long-term consequences of infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus", as the ministry announced.

Long-term health consequences could still exist weeks and months after a corona disease. What symptoms occur with Long Covid, who can be affected and how long-term effects can be avoided - the new portal gives answers to these and other questions.

"Patients need scientifically sound information," explained Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach. The uncertainty and the need for information are enormous, especially when it comes to new clinical pictures. "The pandemic is not over yet, and the number of people affected by long-Covid is increasing," warned Lauterbach. "Politics and science must work hand in hand to ensure the best possible care." This will be done with the new range of information "in an understandable format".

The provisional director of the BZgA, Martin Dietrich, explained that Long Covid is a new type of disease about which there is little reliable knowledge. "It is often difficult for those affected and their relatives to find suitable information and support services." The new online offer is "a source of information and a guide to help and advice at the same time". It should also increase public awareness of Long Covid so that those affected can find suitable help more quickly.

Common complaints of Long Covid are severe exhaustion, problems concentrating or shortness of breath. Even people with an originally mild course of a corona infection can be affected.

According to the information, the website offers answers to common questions as well as support options and recommendations for everyday life, as well as information on the topic of "Long Covid at work".
