Thunderstorms and heavy rain: storms over Germany – Steinmeier cancels the festival

Especially over the east, some heavy thunderstorms with heavy rain showers are currently unloading. So far, little is known about any damage. In the capital, a number of open-air events are being canceled.

As expected, storms with hail and heavy rain have passed over parts of Germany. The German Weather Service (DWD) warned of extreme storms for several regions – warning level four out of four applied. "In the east and in the middle, severe thunderstorms with extremely heavy rain and hail (storm)", it said. Except for western Germany, the DWD expected strong thunderstorms and storms. Severe thunderstorms are expected in the northeast, east and south. In the afternoon, the fire brigade in Berlin declared a state of emergency. The missions are now processed according to their severity.

Many people may have been happy about the rain after the long drought. But he also spoiled some of the Friday evening program: the Berlin State Ballet had to postpone a planned boat tour on the Spree. The band Die Ärzte canceled a concert at Tempelhofer Feld in Berlin at short notice – for safety reasons. Two more concerts are planned for the weekend, which will take place "according to the current status as planned".

To be on the safe side, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Büdenbender canceled their public festival in the evening. "The German Weather Service has announced that there are thunderstorms circling over Berlin," Steinmeier told his 1,500 guests in the park at Bellevue Palace, speaking of "bitter news." He promised the guests who had been invited for their volunteer work that they would all be invited again next year.

At the capital's airport BER, work on the apron was temporarily interrupted. Handling was restricted for around two hours due to a storm, said an airport spokesman. However, further delays in air traffic due to the disrupted processes are to be expected.

According to RBB, storms caused flooding in the Brandenburg district of Ostprignitz-Ruppin. According to the control center, the fire brigade had to move out to around 30 operations within a very short time. A number of streets are under water. In addition, cellars were full. Trees were also down and branches snapped.

According to the MDR, roads were also flooded in the Ore Mountains, in southwest Saxony and parts of Saxon Switzerland. In several places, fire brigades had to clear gullies and pump out basements.

During a violent thunderstorm in the district of Gleidingen in Laatzen near Hanover, lightning struck the roof of a family home. The three residents and two cats suffered no injuries, the fire department said. The extinguishing work is difficult, said a spokesman. The insulation in the roof burned, but the photovoltaic system was undamaged. According to the information, some surrounding houses temporarily had no electricity.

Due to heavy rain in Pinneberg in Schleswig-Holstein, numerous streets, cellars and underground car parks were already full of water in the morning. From around 11 a.m., the Pinneberg fire brigade raised the alarm to deal with the many operations during the storm, as a fire brigade spokesman said. According to the information, fire brigades from surrounding communities also had to help with the more than 120 affected cellars and streets.

While it rained heavily in parts of Germany, the west in particular was spared. "However, there is no country-wide land rain! On the contrary, while it's pouring rain in one place, it stays completely dry in the next-door place," said DWD meteorologist Marcel Schmid.

There is also a risk of increased storm potential in the south and east on Saturday. In the west and northwest, the sun always comes into play. According to the forecasts, however, nowhere more than 30 degrees will be reached. For Sunday, individual showers and thunderstorms, sometimes with heavy rain, are again forecast for the south. In the north-east there may be showery rain at first. The maximum values are between 20 and 28 degrees.
