Bavaria: Rain floods many streets and cellars in northern Bavaria

Roth (dpa / lby) - After heavy thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, several streets and basements were under water in Central Franconia and in the Oberfalz. The Schwabach integrated control center announced on Friday evening that there had been 65 operations in Eckermühlen and Hilpoltstein in the Roth district because of overflowing retention basins, full basements and flooded streets. Fire brigades and technical relief organizations are in action with sandbags.

The responsible control center also reported for the districts of Schwandorf, Amberg-Sulzbach and the city of Amberg on Friday afternoon from 60 to 80 smaller operations, mostly full cellars. Hail fell in Nuremberg in the afternoon. The integrated control center Bamberg-Forchheim reported three to four operations due to flooded basements. "It was completely unspectacular for us," said an employee. The police headquarters in Lower Franconia did not report any special incidents.

The German Weather Service (DWD) had warned of extreme thunderstorms on Friday evening in Lower Franconia, Middle Franconia, Upper Franconia and the Upper Palatinate. Trees could be uprooted, roofs damaged, and basements and streets flooded.
