New car insurance type classes: For whom driving a car is now becoming more expensive

Will you have to pay more for car insurance in 2023? Or will it even get cheaper? The annually recalculated type classes play an important role in the contributions. You can read here which models are particularly affected.

The General Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV) has published the annual recalculation of the type classes. This has an impact on the amount of car insurance. The current reclassifications will take effect on January 1, 2023. The basis for the type class classification is the damage balance of the last three years. Vehicle types that are often involved in accidents and cause high repair costs are rated particularly highly.

The type class statistics show the damage balance of all almost 32,000 car models registered in Germany. There are 16 type classes (10-25) in motor vehicle liability insurance, the insurance benefits for injured third parties after traffic accidents are decisive for the classification of the model. In comprehensive insurance, the GDV statisticians differentiate between 25 type classes (10-34). What is changing there?

"In the future, around 8.1 million motorists will have higher classifications in motor vehicle liability insurance, while around 4.8 million will benefit from better type classes," says Jörg Asmussen, General Manager of the GDV. For 70 percent or around 29.3 million motorists, the type class of the previous year remains. "Big leaps are the exception, only a few models are more than one class up or down," says Asmussen. For example, the Škoda Kamiq 1.5 TSI (type NW, since 2019) has improved by three classes, the Audi Q7 3.0 TDI (type 4L, since 2015) has deteriorated by two type classes.

While in motor vehicle liability insurance the benefits for injured parties are decisive, in comprehensive insurance the value of the insured car plays a role, among other things. Therefore, many high-powered luxury class models and SUVs such as the Mercedes S 350 CDI (type 221, since 2013) and the Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 CRDI ALLRAD (type TM, since 2018) have high type classes, older models and small cars such as the Citroën C3 Picasso 1.4 (Type SH, 2008-2012) or the Seat Mii Electric (Type AA, 2019-2021) rather lower classes.

The comparison portal Verivox also took a look at the new type classes and found that car insurance for a Toyota Yaris was up to 37 percent more expensive. The GDV has upgraded the small car to five classes here. In the model calculation for a single driver, this leads to additional costs of up to 146 euros per year. On the other hand, drivers of a Mazda CX-5 can look forward to savings: You will be relieved of around 308 euros (20 percent) in the fully comprehensive insurance. The fully comprehensive premium for a Ford Edge is also reduced by a fifth. This leads to savings of around 280 euros.

If the premium for car insurance increases as a result of the reclassification, insured persons have a special right of termination. On the GDV website, an individual query of the type class of more than 30,000 vehicles is possible.
