On Twitter: Ashton Kutcher opens up about his rare autoimmune disease: 'Couldn't see or walk'

Ashton Kutcher is in the middle of life: he is an actor, husband of Mila Kunis and father of his two children Wyatt Isabelle and Dimitri Portwood. But a few years ago he was thrown completely off course: he was so bad that he could neither see nor walk. He now writes on Twitter about this difficult and challenging time: "I had a rare flare-up of vasculitis (autoimmune disease) three years ago and afterwards had some impairments in the areas of hearing, vision and balance."

According to reports from the online magazine Deadline, he will speak in more detail in the upcoming episode of the format "Running with Bear Grylls: The Challenge". It also talks about how much time it took him to recover: "It took me about a year to put it all back together. You don't really appreciate it until it's gone, until you say, 'I don't know, I don't know if I'll ever be able to see again. I don't know if I'll ever be able to hear again, I don't know if I'll ever be able to walk again. I'm lucky to be alive.'"

The symptoms of vasculitis, i.e. vascular inflammation, can be very diverse. These include muscle, joint and headaches, numbness or reddish skin changes, as the German Rheumatism League writes on its website. "The vascular inflammations are caused by a faulty immune reaction. The immune system mistakenly sees the body's own substances as foreign and fights them. As a result, the blood vessel becomes inflamed."

Ashton Kutcher appears to be doing well again. On Twitter he lets his fans know: "I've made a full recovery. I'm fine. Let's move on. See you at the NY Marathon 2022".
