"Viewed as a mistake": FC Bayern ticks off drunk driving from world champion

The evening went extremely well for Benjamin Pavard: the FC Bayern defender scored his first goal in the premier class against Inter Milan. But away from the lawn, the main focus is on driving under the influence of alcohol. Not a big deal for the club.

Bayern Munich have fined their defender Benjamin Pavard after a "mistake" off the pitch. "The club reacted correctly in my eyes. Benji reacted correctly, of course saw it as a mistake, which is one, no question," said coach Julian Nagelsmann after the 2-0 Champions League game against Inter Milan at Amazon Prime Video on a question about reports of Pavard driving under the influence of alcohol. The football professional himself has not yet commented on this. The club did not want to comment specifically when asked, but left it at the statements of coach Nagelsmann and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic.

"I think you have to let things rest at some point, even if they happened like that, when the necessary punishment has happened. That happened, both from the state and from the club," added Nagelsmann. The "Bild" newspaper had previously reported that Pavard had been caught by the police at the wheel of a car with alcohol in his blood a few weeks ago.

"That was eight weeks ago, we finished it on the same day or two days later," said sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic after the Inter game on the misconduct of the 26-year-old defender. "We settled that long ago. That's why it's just not worth mentioning."

France international Pavard scored Bayern's opening goal against Inter. It was his first goal in the Champions League. "Then I'm happy that he scored an important goal on a difficult day," commented Nagelsmann.
