Saxony-Anhalt: State supports Halle in its application for a future center

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - Saxony-Anhalt's state government supports the city of Halle in its application for the "Future Center for German Unity and European Transformation". The candidate city of Halle has met most of the criteria of the location competition, said Minister of State and Culture Rainer Robra (CDU) on Tuesday after the cabinet meeting. Therefore, the state government will support the city with the preparation and implementation of the application with 50,000 euros.

The well-networked scientific institutions with thematic references to the content of the future center and the large variety of cultural institutions in terms of interdisciplinary networking were decisive. The accessibility of the city and the location of the planned location also played a role.

In addition to Halle, the cities of Magdeburg, Dessau-Roßlau and Wittenberg had also had hopes in Saxony-Anhalt. The state government also wants to give them the necessary letter of support because, according to Robra, they also have transformation experience and good prerequisites for applying for the location of the future center. According to Robra, the probability that the other cities will be successful despite Halle's preference is still rather low.

With the new institution, the federal government wants to honor the experience of East Germans with change and upheaval. This involves investments of up to 200 million euros. The aim is to create a scientific institute that will also be a meeting place and event location. By 2028, the center is to be housed in a new or remodeled building in eastern Germany.
