Saxony: Chemnitz renews siren warning system: demand is enormous

Dresden/Chemnitz (dpa/sn) - The siren warning system is being expanded in Chemnitz. Eleven new electronic sirens and the retrofitting of the twelve existing systems are planned, as the city announced on Tuesday. The system of electronic sirens is enhanced with a central control system to ensure double triggering and to be able to control the functionality of the sirens and the alarms triggered.

Across the country, numerous municipalities had applied for funds from the federal siren support program. Saxony-wide, around 4.3 million euros are available for this, as the Ministry of the Interior announced on Tuesday. However, the state directorate had received applications from the municipalities with an application volume of around 12.28 million euros. At the beginning of June, Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) announced a Saxon siren support program with an annual volume of 4.59 million euros from 2023. There are currently around 3,200 sirens in Saxony.
