Thuringia: Interior Minister Maier fears less solidarity with Ukraine

Erfurt (dpa/th) - Thuringia's Interior Minister Georg Maier fears tailwind for "lateral thinkers" and right-wing extremists due to the increased energy prices and the debate about security of supply in autumn and winter. "Solidarity with Ukraine is declining significantly," the SPD politician told the editorial network Germany (RND/Sunday). The high gas prices would hit people hard. "It gives extremists the chance to mobilize people. We have to keep that in mind."

Politicians must send clear messages, Maier demanded. Among other things, it is about supporting low-income people in particular. In addition to other politicians, Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) was recently attacked by so-called lateral thinkers during his summer trip to Bayreuth in Bavaria and Schleusingen in Thuringia.
