Baden-Württemberg: Climate activists in court for road blockades

They pour mashed potatoes on art, stick themselves to walls or sit in traffic. Last generation climate activists have been causing a stir for months. Now two climate protectors are on trial again.

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Two climate protection activists from the protest group "Last Generation" have to answer to the Stuttgart district court on Monday (11:00 a.m.) because of several road blockades in rush hour traffic. The men took to the streets last May and June. Another trial against a climate activist from the group is scheduled for Wednesday (12:30 p.m.). It is still unclear whether a verdict will be decided on these days.

For months, the group has been blocking roads and highways across Germany. She calls for a "stop to the fossil madness". She also advocates a law against food waste and an agricultural turnaround to reduce greenhouse gases.

However, after a serious accident in Berlin that resulted in the death of a cyclist, the protest group has come under increasing criticism. Politicians are calling for tougher action, and climate activists are increasingly being attacked on social networks.

In Berlin, a cyclist was hit and run over by a truck. According to the fire brigade, a special vehicle that was supposed to help free the injured person under the truck was stuck in a traffic jam that was said to have been triggered by an action by the climate protest group "Last Generation".

However, the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" reported, citing an emergency memo, that according to the emergency doctor treating it, the fact that the car was not available had no effect on the rescue of the injured woman. According to the police and the public prosecutor's office, the cyclist died on Thursday from her serious injuries.
