Baden-Württemberg: Hop farmers expect a lower harvest than in previous years

Tettnang (dpa/lsw) - Hop farmers on Lake Constance are expecting a below-average harvest this year. The weather was too hot and too dry from spring to summer, the Tettnang Hop Growers Association announced on Monday in Tettnang (Bodenseekreis). A yield of around 2,400 tons is expected on an area under cultivation of around 1,500 hectares, of which 47 hectares are young hops.

The hop farmers explained that it was a great challenge to keep the stocks healthy. The hop aphid spread extremely early. The red spider also found ideal conditions due to the many summer and hot days. According to the information, the companies were also burdened by the high inflation and increased production costs for fertilisers, crop protection and energy.

The harvest in the Tettnang growing region will begin in the next few days, around a week earlier than in previous years.
