Bavaria: Herrmann: 180,000 refugees from Ukraine in Bavaria

Munich (dpa/lby) - Since Russia's attack on Ukraine on February 24, around 180,000 people have fled the country to Bavaria. This was announced by Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) on Wednesday in Munich. 28 percent of them are housed in state or municipal accommodation. More than 70 percent had looked for private accommodation or stayed with relatives or friends. Nationwide, the number of refugees from Ukraine is 980,000, as Herrmann summed up six months after the start of the war.

The minister thanked the employees of the authorities, but especially the people who took in refugees privately. "Without this selflessness and great willingness to help, Bavaria would be a lot poorer."

However, Herrmann also pointed out that the capacities in state asylum accommodation were largely exhausted. "The federal government must finally meet its financial responsibility for the costs of accommodating Ukrainian war refugees and asylum seekers," he demanded, emphasizing that the municipalities should not be left alone.
