Rammstein on New Year's Eve in Munich - a mega event for the fans, and sensational advertising for the city. But the plans for a concert with more than 100,000 people have burst.
Munich (dpa / lby) - There will be no New Year's Eve concert by Rammstein in Munich. After a conversation with the city of Munich in the morning, the organizer surprisingly canceled, said a spokesman for the district administration department (KVR) on Tuesday. Several media had previously reported about it, including the media group "Münchner Merkur tz".
According to the spokesman, the Leutgeb Entertainment Group justified the decision with the high time pressure under which they would have had to develop a coherent security concept. The mega event on December 31 should attract 145,000 spectators to the Theresienwiese. Only a few days ago, the city council decided to make the Oktoberfest site available for this, against the votes of the Greens, Left and ÖDP.
The supporters had hoped that this would have a huge advertising effect for Munich, as Rammstein also has a huge international fan base. Critics referred, among other things, to the already heavy burden on the police, fire brigade and rescue workers on New Year's Eve. The arrival and departure of more than 100,000 people would have been a challenge. Munich's cultural event organizers also saw themselves as being at a disadvantage, having so far been denied the right to hold large concerts on the Theresienwiese.
The Austrian organizer has experience with major events. At the beginning of August, 90,000 people came to Andreas Gabalier's open-air concert at the Munich exhibition center, followed shortly by Helene Fischer (August 20) and Robbie Williams (August 27).
With Rammstein, the situation would have been different again, said the KVR spokesman. Unlike the trade fair, the Theresienwiese is in the city center and there are many residents. The timing also plays a role, so the organizers should have taken into account the launching of New Year's rockets in the security concept.
