Bavaria: Valuable cargo: elaborate return journey of an altarpiece

Aldersbach (dpa / lby) - It is the largest painting that has been restored by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments: The altarpiece has now been returned to the home church in Lower Bavaria. The almost four by seven meter canvas was "meticulously" rolled up, provided with nonwoven fabric and a protective cover and finally transported by truck from the studio in Munich to Aldersbach in the Passau district, as the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments announced on Tuesday.

For around 14 months, two freelance restorers worked on the 400-year-old monumental altarpiece by the court painter Johann Matthias Kager (1575-1634). According to the information, the painting had only been patched and edited on site in the former monastery church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

The state office announced that the damage had now been "completely and professionally" restored. The work of art can only be admired again once the renovations of the church have been completed. The work is expected to last until 2023.
